Simply Sweet Onions

A growers' cooperative from a Mid-Atlantic state has developed a new variety of onion to rival Georgia's Vidalias and Washington's Walla Wallas. First, "we're trying to get protection for the name and the product with help from the state and from a firm that specializes in helping inventors."

The Simply Sweet Onion's success comes from a new hybrid using a revolutionary growing technique. A nationwide Associated Press story about this new onion variety that can grow to the size of a baseball has gardeners and vegetable farmers everywhere excited. The first retail supplies of the onions went on sale in select national supermarkets during the fall of 2002 and were quickly sold out. Watch for them in your local supermarket.
