"The best way to predict the future is to invent it"-Alan Kay
Many inventors take inspiration from the innovators before them. This is evident when examining four of the greatest inventions of all time fromChina. Ancient China is often recognized for its cultural and technical contributions to the world. The following inventions, sometimes known as the great four Chinese inventions, include some of the most important developments in the history of mankind.
The first of the great four Chinese inventions is gun powder, which originated as a mixture of sulfur and saltpeter with charcoal. This product was not originally intended as a weapon, but rather a constructive product utilized for skin treatments, fumigations, and other similar functions. Eventually, continued experimentation led to the realization of the true chemical power of this substance.
Lodestones, a naturally occurring magnet, were originally used by ancient Chinese fortune tellers in order todivine the direction that a persons life was taking. Eventually, they noticed that the iron oxide in these stones tended to align in a north-south manner, in fact making them better suited for telling the direction a person was physically facing. This led to the development of magnetized needles for use in nautical navigation.
The first paper-type writing material developed in China was bamboo paper. This product is a forerunner of the modern stock utilized worldwide, and the original bamboo paper is still utilized in Chinese calligraphy. The Chinese also experimented with methods for making paper from tree bark and other similar organic materials.
The development of printing techniques is one of the most important in the history of the world. Efficient and replicable printing techniques were instrumental in the ability of our cultures to transmit information and record history. Many of the earliest printing techniques are rooted in Chinese history. For example, the Chinese created block printing in which printed words are carved into a block, filled with ink, and stamped onto a surface. This technology led to some of the worlds first published books.
While these great four Chinese inventions are notable for their widespread impact on the modern world, many other great innovations came from China. These include items integral to the modern world such as rudders, parachutes, andthe agricultural advancement of row crop methods. In hindsight, one can easily see how these simple ideas influenced society for thousands of years afterwards.
