"The best way to predict the future is to invent it"-Alan Kay
It might seem trivial to celebrate one-hundred years of 5-pin bowling, when the Canadians have contributed such innovative, and wondrous inventions to the world. The game, only played in Canada, was discovered by Thomas Ryan of Toronto in 1909. It was devised to enable bowlers a chance to have a quick game during their half-hour lunch break. The use of a smaller ball cradled in the hand, can travel faster and can be thrown more rapidly as opposed to the large balls and pins, therefore shortening the time of play. Some of the greatest inventions from Canada include a few perceived as belonging to the United States. They are the telephone, insulin, and the walkie-talkie to mention just a few. Born in Scotland, Alexander Graham Bell immigrated to Canada while a young man. He then set about creating a way to communicate back across the distances of Canada, his new home. Suffering from severe headaches while working in Boston, he returned to his home in Ontario for some relaxation at a nearby bluff he called his dreaming place and brainstormed the idea for a harmonic telegraph . Thus, the telephone eventually became a reality to become a most important contribution to the whole world. One of the medical worlds greatest inventions from Canada was insulin. Claiming that it came to him in a dream, Frederick Banting along with some of his colleagues, managed to isolate the compound in 1921. It was recognized as a life saving treatment for the dreaded disease, diabetes, which at the time was considered as deadly as cancer. Banting was awarded the Nobel prize for his invention in 1923. Another contribution to the medical world that has become a common place need by the heart patient, is the Pacemaker. John Hopps realized that you could restart a cooled heart mechanically, or by electrical stimulation while he was researching hypothermia. His research led him to devise the first cardiac pacemaker in 1950, however, it was to large to be used internally. It has since been modified to be placed inside the chest.
Gideon Sundback invented the zipper back in 1913, an invention we couldn t imagine doing without. It replaced fasteners such as hooks, bone pins and needles which were unreliable and sometimes unreliable. They also keep out cold, snow and rain, as opposed to buttons. One of the most important inventions to come out of Canada is the electric wheelchair. There were many quadriplegics returning from the action of World War two and that was what motivated George Klein to invent the motorized wheelchair. It has also been modified to accommodate returning veterans who have other types of injuries requiring the wheelchair.
The two Canadians, Woodward and Evans who patented the light bulb in 1874 could not afford the funds to produce and sell their invention. They ended up selling it to Thomas Edison. Oh Canada! On a dietary note, one of the important dishes in Quebec, Canada is poutine, which is made up of French fries, melted cheese and cheese curds smothered in hot gravy. Apparently it is a big hit in America, Europe and Asia.
