When introducing a new idea, it is ideal to have a professionally developed and patented product, prototyped and fully working and ready to be produced. However, time and budget concerns dictate that you either take your idea to a potential investor to raise capital, or to a company to get licensing. Because of the time and effort expended to schedule a meeting for production, the inventor has little time to work on a presentation that will make a good first impression.
If you meet with someone to showcase your invention, usually a private investor or the CEO of a company, inspiring confidence in your invention is key. You should stress your products potential cost and viability in a competitive market. A prototype as opposed to a rough sketch is a more impressive way to present an idea to potential investors.
In order to present a detailed description or abstract of your invention you may want to hire a qualified patent attorney and engineer. The cost of hiring said parties varies depending on the complexity of your invention and the experience of the professional team.
There are several steps before your have a patented invention. There is an initial cost to file the patent application with the USPTO; this cost varies depending on the type of application. The USPTO examines your idea and conducts a patent search in order to find if you have a novel and non-obvious invention. If your invention meets the criteria of the USPTO you will then pay an issuing fee for a patent.
Before any filing procedure is initiated, you should be prepared to follow through on the steps needed to file for a patent. If it takes too long to complete the process, the invention could become public domain before a patent application is filed. A patent attorneys knowledge is very helpful to any inventor through this process.
Once you have successfully completed the application process, your attorney or agent will probably make you aware of the maintenance fees, which include fees for reissuing your patent. Also, at this time you should be made aware of the vigilance that is necessary to insure that no one infringes on your invention.
