"The best way to predict the future is to invent it"-Alan Kay
This article takes a look at ten inventions which are arguably the top 10 inventions of all time. These are some of the devices, apparatuses, machines, do-hickeys, whatchamacallits, and thingamajigs that have touched millions upon billions of people worldwide.
Two of the classic inventions of all time date from prior to recorded human history. The first is, of course, the discovery of fire. Fire allowed early humans to cook food, thereby reducing illness and increasing the range of consumable foods. It revolutionized medicine, hygiene, power, light, and countless other important fields. The other classic ancient invention? The wheel! Thank goodness for that one.
Moving ahead, we start to notice inventions that shaped the way the world worked. Many of these innovations radically changed human life so much that they were responsible for what we now view as entirely new eras! The printing press allowed for the spread of knowledge and learning like never before in human history. Similarly, the invention of the plough vastly increased our food production capabilities, allowing for city growth, diversity of labor, increased populations, and many other modern realities.
The more you take something for granted now, the greater of an idea it was when first conceived. Think about light bulbs, and imagine not being able to see indoors at night without lighting a fire. And how about the sewing machine? At one time, most people could only afford one or two sets of clothing!
The late 1800s and early 1900s saw some of the most radical shifts in everyday life thanks to technology. The invention of the internal combustion engine meant no longer relying on animals for personal transportation. Perhaps even more radically, the advent of radio ushered in the era of wireless, instant communication over long distances- something we cannot even imagine being without today!
Many people argue that the invention of the transistor in 1947 is the most significant innovation in human history, making possible most modern electronics including the earth-shattering capabilities of modern computers. This lead to what is undoubtedly the most significant development in human communication everthe Internet!
